A magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred just 12 minutes ago 45 km northeast of Taiwan’s Taitung city, the German Geoscience Research Center (GFZ) reported.
The earthquake struck at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the epicenter near the city of Taitung, Taiwan, in the early evening on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 7:12 p.m. local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
A second report was then released by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken glass, etc.
In the town of Taitung (109,600 inhabitants) located 45 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as a slight tremor.
Weak tremors could be felt in Yujing (16,600 inhabitants) located 91 km from the epicenter, Lugu (19,600 inhabitants) at 93 km, Hualien (350,500 inhabitants) at 99 km, Puli (86,400 inhabitants) at 102 km, Douliu (104,700 inhabitants) 105 km, the town of Nantou (105,700 inhabitants) 113 km, the new village of Zhongxing (25,500 inhabitants) 115 km and the town of Kaohsiung (1,519,700 inhabitants) at 120 km.
