The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in Iran near Zarand, Kerman, just 14 minutes ago. The earthquake struck in the early afternoon on Saturday October 16, 2021 at 2:46 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which also listed the 4.6 magnitude earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken glass, etc.
In Zarand (59,000 inhabitants) located 16 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as slight tremors.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Shahrak-e Pābedānā (6,500 inhabitants) located 34 km from the epicenter, Rafsanjān (147,700 inhabitants) at 61 km and Rāvar (40,200 inhabitants) at 62 km.
Other towns close to the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as very weak tremors include Kerman (577,500 inhabitants) located 89 km from the epicenter, Kerman (577,500 inhabitants) at 89 km and Bardsīr ( 37,200 inhabitants) 102 km.
