A 5.0 magnitude earthquake near Antofagasta, Chile, was reported just 12 minutes ago by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the major international agencies monitoring the earthquake activity around the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 23 km below the epicenter on the morning of Sunday, November 21, 2021 at 8:50 a.m. local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which also listed the quake at a magnitude of 5.0.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken glass, etc.
In Antofagasta (309,800 inhabitants) located 30 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as a slight tremor.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant earthquake news becomes available.
