War in Ukraine: what you need to know
The last: Ukraine has managed to reclaim about 20% of the city of Severodonetsk, its last major anchor in Luhansk, provincial governor Serhiy Haidai said on Friday evening. Britain predicted earlier today that the entire region, which is mostly controlled by Russia, could collapse within two weeks. But Haidai took a bullish note and called the timetable “completely unrealistic”, even as Moscow would have sent more troops to the key eastern city.
The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is making further gains in eastern Ukraine against valiant but under-equipped Ukrainian forces. The United States and its allies are rushing to deliver the huge quantities of weapons that the Ukrainians urgently need if they are to keep the Russians at bay.
Arms: Ukraine uses weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, supplied by the United States and other allies. Russia has used an array of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn analysts’ attention and concern.
